Why I made Ready Story
Hi, I’m a mom of two. One of my kids is on the autism spectrum.
For our family, new things were always the hardest part. The first daycare was a big change. When we moved to a second daycare, we started over from the beginning. Then came airplanes: the airport line, the noise, the seatbelt sign, the strangers sitting close. I could see the worry building days before. Honestly, I was worried about everything new too.
Some of the hardest moments were small ones. A rule we had to follow right then: hold my hand in the parking lot, keep the seatbelt on, wait our turn. In the middle of a hard moment, words don’t land. I couldn’t explain why fast enough. I needed a way to explain it before the moment came, calmly, in a way my child could look at again and again.
That’s what a social story does. It’s a short picture story that says what will happen, in order, names the feeling, and gives a way to cope. Social stories helped. But every one I found showed a different kid, a different dentist, a different airport. My child didn’t see themselves in it.
So I started making our own. Our car, our grown-ups, the exact steps of the day. We read them a few times before anything new. The day still felt big. It just didn’t feel unknown anymore.
Ready Story turns that idea into something any parent can make. Pick the moment, make the child in the book look like your child, and print it tonight. No account. The same child on every page.
If money is tight, ask for a free code. No proof, no questions. Every family should be able to help their child get ready.
